In the United States, more children die from child abuse and
neglect than any other single leading cause of death.

Child abuse is reported every 10 seconds in America – there are
nearly 3 million reports of child abuse made annually, and the
rate of child abuse is estimated to be 3 times greater than
reported..

The total annual direct costs of child abuse and neglect in the
United States exceeded $33 billion in 2008. The total indirect
annual costs of child abuse and neglect in the United States
is over $100 billion.

It is estimated that children who suffer abuse and neglect are
59% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 28% more likely to
be arrested as an adult and 38% more
likely to become violent criminals as adults.

More than 75% of the children killed by abuse are three years
old and under. Nearly 45% are under the age of one.
1,500 children die every year from child abuse and neglect.
That is just over 4 fatalities every day.
Approximately 80% of all child abusers are the children’s own
parent.
Children who have been sexually abused are 2.5 times more likely
to develop alcohol abuse and 3.8 times more likely to develop
drug addictions.
Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers donate 4.9
million hours of advocacy for children nationwide annually; if
compensated to perform such a role, the total would exceed more
than $245 million.
1/3 of abused and neglected children will eventually victimize
their own children.
In 2008, there were more than half a million children living in
foster care.
In 2008, there were more than 60,000 CASA volunteers served as caring
adults in the lives of more than 243,000 children.
Since the CASA of Jefferson and Gilpin Counties program started,
we have served over 700 children.
Judges, attorneys, child welfare workers and parents
overwhelmingly report that CASA volunteers make a difference in
the lives of children that they serve.
